College tends to be a very stressful time. Students are trying to figure out who they are and what they want to do in the future. Here are some tips that make the College experience less intimidating.
Get to Know Your Professors
Your professors are here to help you. Utilize their office hours and always look to ask questions. Keeping in touch with professors will help you with not only the class they teach but later on in life too. You never know who they may know, they could help you down the road land a job or internship.
Follow Along with the Syllabus
Some professors may not remind you of when work is due or when tests will be given in class. When this is the case, be sure to frequently consult the class syllabus, and take time email the instructor. Most professors respond to emails as soon as they can.
Use the Library
Whether it be to print something out or just to have a nice place to chill, the library is very useful. The librarians at St. Joseph’s are patient and willing to help with any problem you may have.
Utilize the Student Discount
The student discount is great — discounts are available on food, appliances, retail and entertainment. Specifically, students are eligible for discounts with Amazon, Apple, Dish TV, AT&T and Hotels.com.
They look great on a resume and they’re a great way to make new friends. SJC Long Island has dozens of clubs and organizations. Greek life fraternities and sororities support different charities and organizations. St. Joseph’s has many clubs that are environmentally friendly and more. You can find a list of the clubs and organizations under the student life tab on the SJC Long Island homepage, or by clicking here.
Get Involved with Events
SJC hosts many events throughout the year. Many are held during common hour. Getting involved with different events is a nice way to branch out of your comfort zone and discover new interests. Keep up with the events by following the SJC social media pages and by checking the SJC Long Island calendar.
Do Not Procrastinate!
This is a big one. Some students have the habit of procrastinating. DO NOT DO THIS. It adds unnecessary stress to your life, and certainly no one needs that. Get a planner and write down when different assignments are due and what days you have tests. Make a schedule for studying or working on assignments. It may seem like a lot of work, especially if you have a job, but it can be done. It’ll make life so much easier to get the assignments done early, so you can avoid worrying about needing to pull an all-nighter and rushing to get things done at the last minute.
